Summer is on the way, and no doubt the children are getting excited already about all the extra time they will have now that they don't have to worry about school anymore. But the last thing you want is to have your kids hiding in the house, missing out on all that crucial fresh air and sunshine—you want to come up with some great ways to keep them out of the house and getting some exercise. Here are four great activities to keep your kids moving around until next school season.

1. Go for a Swim

The first thing that comes to anyone's mind as summer hits is getting out of the heat and into some nice, cool water, and swimming is great exercise for growing children. Try to take your children to the local swimming holes as much as possible and, as you know, it will be nearly impossible to get them back out of the water.

If you're schedule is not as free as theirs during the hotter months, find a local pool with a lifeguard on duty, or take turns with another parent to chaperone the kids around.

2. Put on a Game

Putting on a casual competition is always a great way to get kids enthusiastic about athletic recreation. Gather the kids in your neighborhood and put together baseball, basketball, and flag football games in a pinch. Putting some money into some high quality equipment can go a long ways to keeping the kids safe and building skills for participating in sports when they get older, but do not take the rules too seriously in these casual games.

3. Plan a Hiking Trip

If your kids are getting a little older and can get around on their own more, plan hiking trips. They don't all need to be three-day marathons. A simple day hike just outside of town can be a great chance to get out and get some rays, and spending this time in nature can give your children a healthy respect for the planet. If they really take to the wild, perhaps you can plan some longer hiking missions later on.

4. Hit the Park

The park is, of course, always a great place to get the kids some exercise, and there are typically other children there to play with as well. If you don't have the time to take them down to a park with a playground much, consider setting up some playground equipment in your own yard, and they can get all the fun-filled exercise they need while you are getting things done.

There are plenty of different ways to get kids enthusiastic about outdoor play—it is really nothing more than taking the time to figure out what your kids like and then committing to it as a part of your schedule. As long as the activities you plan are exciting enough, their own adrenaline will take over from there.
