Even for those of us without the luxury of having a playground in our own backyard, our children will no doubt spend plenty of time in playgrounds growing up. And for the most part, that is a good thing. After all, playing outside, especially on play structures, is great for your child's health, giving them a chance to develop strength, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular health. They also get plenty of sunshine and fresh air.

But there are also risks involved in every playground—this is just the way the world works. It's nothing to get stressed out about, as everything in life comes with a little risk unless you hide inside everyday, but knowing what they are can make you and your child more prepared.

Possibilities for injuries to occur in a playground come sometimes from the equipment itself—for instance, deteriorating materials, unsafe designs, and unstable surfaces—but a lot of the injuries that occur are the result of unsafe or careless actions. The good thing about this is it puts it well within you and your child's control.

These problems can be prevented through constant parental supervision, inspecting equipment, and laying good ground rules. If you are not going to be around while children are playing, make sure that the playground, whether a public one or an activity center at their school, will have an adult around, keeping an eye on things. An adult can watch to make sure the kids aren't being unsafe in their play. They also are responsible for taking care of the situation if something does occur, and the best adult supervision is someone who has some type of first aid training.

Of course, it is the youngest of children that need the most attention. Not only are they often oblivious to how easily they can be hurt, but they are not coordinated enough to play on the equipment as well as older kids do. The different dynamic between younger and older kids playing in the same place, however, makes them want to try, and this is where injuries often occur.

The older children, on the other hand, may be a little bit more aware of the dangers, but they also let to see how far they can push it and have begun to discover how fun a little adrenaline can be. This can lead to some very serious injuries. One of the best ways you can be sure of the integrity in the equipment your children are playing on is by setting up a small playground in your own yard so that you have full control of the environment. Always make sure that you have created a setup that is easy to monitor. If your children are very young, you should never let them play alone. Older kids may come with some leeway, but there should always be an adult close by who is checking from time to time to make sure things are on the up and up.

Set some ground rules for your kids to let them know what is allowed, and make it clear that breaking the rules does not come without punishment. With a little cooperation on their part, some sound equipment, and a watchful adult eye, they can have all the fun they want, injury-free.
