When it comes down to it no one really expects a car accident to happen, but just like that, they can come along and shatter your world in an instant. Even an accident that occurs without anyone receiving a scratch can put a huge damper on your day, if not your year due to financial damages, and as we all know, many accidents lead to serious injury, disfigurement, and loss of life.

While you cannot always avoid car accidents, you can try to minimize the risk of a car accident turning leading to you being seriously injured or killed. Here are some precautions you should never take for granted.

1. Give to Aggressive Drivers

First of all, you should always yield to an overly-aggressive driver. Not only will this cut back your risks of getting in an accident in the first place, but someone who hogs the road, steals the right of way, and cuts people off is typically also a very fast driver. Accidents at higher speeds, even if only one of the drivers is going fast, are much more likely to be fatal.

2. Avoid Excessive Speed

For that same reason, you should always drive at or below the speed limits; those aren't arbitrary numbers—they are determined for a reason. And again, driving at more than reasonable speeds makes it far more likely you will stay out of accidents in the first place.

3. Follow All Safety Procedures

By safety procedures, I mean the basics of course—the most paramount being to wear your seatbelt at all times. In addition, perform regular safety checks on your vehicle to make sure all the lights are working and keep your vehicle maintained, especially the brakes. Finding out your brakes do not work as good as you thought when you need them the most can turn a minor accident into a major one.

4. Drive Even Slower Around Danger

Certain things on the road are more dangerous than others, and while you should always drive with caution, there are times when extreme caution is a necessity. Some good examples of this are when you are driving along a mountain road with drop offs or driving alongside an eighteen-wheeler. These are not situations where you stand to come out slightly injured if you happen to crash.

Driving a vehicle can be a dangerous thing, but a lot of things in life are dangerous. If we did not expose ourselves to risks at all, well then, life would not quite be worth living, would it? Follow some of these simple precautions so that in the unlikely event the risks do catch up with you, there will be a much greater chance for you to emerge unscathed.
