As much as we like to see our children have a great time, dealing with a hyperactive child who always seems to be running high is no easy feat. Parenting in this day and age is challenging enough as we race to keep up with a world that has a hyperactive pace of its own. In this article, we'll go over some simple ways you can manage an over-energetic child without losing your mind.
1. Don't Overreact
As mentioned before, a hyperactive child can really begin to wear on us, especially if we are frustrated and stretched thin by life already. But it is imperative you keep a hold on your emotions. Acting out in an angry manner might seem to calm things down momentarily and at times may just feel unavoidable, but all it does is to aggravate your child's anxiety, making matters worse. In contrast, leading by example and showing how to deal with emotions properly can go a long way towards teaching them to manage their own emotions.
2. Provide Some Structure
Hyperactive children also tend to be very spontaneous and unstructured, and in some ways that can become strength, but most unstructured people could use some more structure in their lives. As their young age, it can provide a balance for them and some guidance through the chaos. Establish regular routines for managing the day—you may also find yourself becoming more productive and your own nerves calmed as a result.
3. Keep Them Active
Although you might get annoyed and overwhelmed at times, you may want to look at hyperactivity as a case of a child being blessed with an abundance of energy. Far too many people in modern society are lazy and lethargic, and if your child is lucky, they will always love being active.
Embrace that and give them an outlet for all that energy by promoting exercise and active play. Let them out into the backyard and let them run wild—even though structure is great for them throughout the day, nothing burns off energy like completely unhindered play.
Keep plenty of sports-related toys and sports equipment around, and consider playsets and playground equipment as a way to maintain a play area in your yard.
4. Don't Give Up
When kids are a bit much to handle, it is tempting to just let it go when they repeat the same misbehavior over and over again, almost as if to test you. But when you do this, it teaches your child that if they just keep at it you will eventually let them have their way. In essence, you are teaching them to use their energy against you.
It's important to mean it when you tell your child not to do something and enforce the rules when they are broken. Even when you are worn out and tired of telling them over and over again, you should stay on top of things and stay consistent with realistic punishments.
A little hyperactivity can be taxing at times, but if put in the right perspective and confronted head on, by enforcing the rules and providing outlets for energy, it can be managed. Follow some of these simple tips to find the balance you need.
