While many of the wonders of the modern world have transformed our lives and opened up potentials we never could have dreamed of before, not all of the changes have been good. One way this is true is the way that Americans eat. Most of us are far too busy to cook food from scratch anymore, and we find that our family's lives are just as chaotic, so the typical family eats on the run. There's just no time to sit down and enjoy a meal together anymore.

But in many ways, the ritual of eating dinner together is one thing that we really need—here are four ways doing just that can benefit your family.

1. Keep Updated

With everyone so busy, it is almost impossible to keep track of what is going on with our family anymore. It's not that we don't care about what they are doing with their lives, we just do not have the time, and our attention is spread so thin it is difficult to keep up with it all.

While conversations over dinner may not be enough to give us that deep emotional bonding, which we certainly need as well, it is a chance to touch bases with everyone and stay in tune with one another's lives.

2. Sets a Routine

Even though people are busier than ever, we have not learned to handle our time better, and the result is that we are often living a chaotic, unproductive existence—imagine the proverbial chicken running around with said head cut off. Having an established routine is a better way of organizing time and gives everyone some structure. This brings a degree of normalcy back to the American home.

3. Create Cohesion

Taking the time to talk with each person about what they are doing and how their day went is a lot more than a way to "catch up on the news." It is also a time to share opinions and teach your children how to communicate.

Express interest in everyone's words, and allow everyone a fair chance to talk. This process goes a long way in establishing the idea of your family as cohesive unit in everyone's mind. You can expand on this by having your children help out with preparing the meal or cleaning up afterwards.

4. Better Health

People may feel they don't have the time to cook every meal, but families who prepare food at home typically eat far healthier—microwavable dinners and junk food on the run is not the right type of nourishment for your child. Not to mention that when everyone is eating on their own schedule, and possibly not even eating the same thing, it is nearly impossible to monitor habits.

When at least the main meal is scheduled, your child's health is much easier to control, and they will develop a taste for healthy home cooking. Don't just give them the healthy food they need—actually teach them why eating properly is important, and what they gain is a lifelong habit of health.

Many parents take a shortcut approach to some areas of parenting if they think that certain things really don't make a difference. After all, if one child has a completely different schedule than everyone else and we are all crammed for time, why make things harder by insisting on a sit-down meal? But as the list above shows, there is much more to sitting down and breaking bread together than honoring vague tradition.

Bring the family dinner back into your home, and reap the rewards.
